How to choose an entry-level colour production press in the UAE
3 min read
An entry-level colour production press is the step up from an office copier. It is the machine a print shop, a corporate in-plant, a university or an agency uses for brochures, booklets, business cards and short runs on mixed paper. Most presses in this class look similar on a brochure. The differences show up in the details below, so these are the questions to ask before you sign.
The short version: price the press for the paper you actually print, the finishing you actually need and the service you can actually get in the UAE. The headline speed is the least useful number on the brochure.
The work decides the press: brochures, booklets and flyers on mixed paper weights are typical jobs for an entry-level colour production press.
1. What is the speed on your heaviest paper?
Brochure speeds are usually measured on standard-weight A4. Many presses run slower on heavy cover stock. Ask for the rated speed at the paper weight you print most, and for the maximum paper weight it can print on both sides. If half your work is 300 g/m² covers, that is the figure that sets your turnaround.
2. How long a sheet can it print?
Six-panel brochures, book jackets and short banners need sheets longer than SRA3. Ask for the longest sheet the press can print and whether that length works on one side only or on both sides.
3. Which front end and workflow?
The controller (the "front end") manages colour, job queues and imposition. Many presses offer the manufacturer's own controller and an EFI Fiery option. If your designers already use Fiery colour profiles, keeping Fiery saves time. Ask which controller is included in the price.
4. What finishing do you need inline?
Booklet making, trimming, creasing and perforating can change the price more than the print engine does. Price the configuration you will actually run, not the base machine.
5. Who services it, and where are the parts?
A press earns money only when it is running. Ask any supplier where their engineers are based, which parts and consumables they hold in the UAE, and what response time they will put in the contract.
6. Is the machine built for this region?
Ask whether the press was supplied for the Middle East market and who honours the manufacturer's warranty in the UAE. Power supply, language support and consumables can differ between regions.
